Message regarding coronavirus:

Dear Section, Branch, and other ASCE Leaders:

ASCE has received questions from a number of volunteer leaders regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and its impact on your upcoming meetings and events. We want you to know that we are monitoring the situation closely and taking careful consideration of the concerns raised by our members and leaders.

While the circumstances of this outbreak are changing rapidly, at present ASCE does not believe it is appropriate to issue a blanket recommendation for all entities on proceeding with meetings and activities. Instead, we believe that each entity must make decisions about future activities on an individual basis, balancing the operational needs of your group and other financial, legal, and strategic considerations against the goal of prioritizing the health and safety of your participants.

In determining your path forward, we recommend looking to criteria such as:

  • guidelines issued by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and/or state and local health authorities;
  • travel bans and/or restrictions from member employers;
  • the likelihood of multiple cancellations and the impact on the success of your event;
  • the ability to mitigate risks through heightened sanitization, “social distancing” practices, or other measures; and
  • the possibility of postponing or conducting the event/activity virtually.

If deciding to continue with an event, we encourage you to remind participants to follow good health habits such as frequently washing their hands; avoiding touching their eyes, nose, and mouth; and not attending if sick. More prevention tips can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/prevention-treatment.html.

Please visit the CDC’s webpage (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) for the latest updates and recommendations on travel (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html).

Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss your options or with any other questions you may have.

Best Regards,

Tara Hoke, Esq.
